Protests against Proposition 8 supporters, including the Roman Catholic church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which collaboratively campaigned in favor of California's Proposition 8 through volunteer and financial support for the measure, took place starting in November 2008. The proposition was a ballot initiative for the November 4, 2008, general election restricting marriage to male-female couples. During the period of time between a May 2008 ruling by the Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage and ratification of the vote of Proposition 8, 18,000 same-sex couples were married.
