The 2011 Virginia Tech shooting occurred on December 8, 2011, on the campus of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. A university police officer was shot and killed by a white male during a traffic stop in the Cassell Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall. After that, the shooter fled to another parking lot named the "Cage", where a body believed to be that of the shooter was discovered. A weapon was left at the scene. An alert was issued at 12:37 p.m., and the campus was placed on lock down at 1:01 p.m., which was then followed by all schools in Montgomery County at 2:12 p.m. Blacksburg recreational events planned for the day were canceled. All Blacksburg transit services were suspended. The majority of students were inside at the time for Reading Day, a study day without classes before semester finals. Finals set for December 9 were postponed after the shooting. The alert was lifted at 4:31 p.m. (more from wikipedia).
